The "National Anthem" of the United States, also known as "The Star-Spangled Banner," is typically performed in the key of B-flat major. The lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, inspired by the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The melody is based on the English drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven" by John Stafford Smith. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was officially recognized as the U.S. national anthem by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and later confirmed by Congress in 1931. It is commonly performed at patriotic events, sports games, and official ceremonies throughout the United States.
