La esmeralda

The ballet La Esmeralda by Cesare Pugni is primarily in the key of E major, though it includes various key changes throughout different scenes. It was composed in 1844 for the ballet choreographed by Jules Perrot and inspired by Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Cesare Pugni, an Italian composer known for his prolific ballet work, created the music specifically for this production, which premiered at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. A trivia point is that the role of Esmeralda was originally danced by the ballerina Carlotta Grisi. The melody across the ballet includes romantic and dramatic themes, featuring orchestral textures, dance rhythms, and expressive leitmotifs to support narrative scenes.
