The Ruins of Athens

The Ruins of Athens is an overture composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in the key of C major. It was written in 1811 as incidental music for a play by August von Kotzebue. The music was first performed on September 15, 1812, at the reopening of the Vienna Theater after it was destroyed by fire. Beethoven himself conducted the premiere. The overture features triumphant and majestic passages, along with energetic and lively melodies. It is often regarded as a patriotic piece celebrating the rebuilding of Vienna after the devastation.
